Design is more about adjusting your own mindset than changing that of others. About bending your message to fit the mindset of your users. Be bold while remaining humble, have vision and tirelessly strive to improve on what we already have.
We should talk about doability over usability. Interaction happens with two separate entities. We don’t want to interact, we want to eliminate that gap altogether. Designers and developers care about a lot of stuff that doers don’t, and it’s our job to be bossed around by them.
Web is an open highway of content. Any talk about “online” will be moot after the concept of “offline” has disappeared. I aim to craft web with care, while finding new ways of delivering new things. I don't think of languages, devices, user profiles or developers vs. users – I just think of people.
The classical web is static, page load after page load. People will expect more. I’m developing Proot to counter the dead web – we need new tools that help us build living interfaces with motion and character.
Sandboxes built from simple elements give users tools for self-expression. Games are subtly guided experiences that are contributed to by both designer and end-user. Users shouldn’t be commanded, we should focus on creating circumstances for play.
Your average game designer builds mechanical mazes for robotic consumers to wade through, but I care about holistic experiences – things that matter to human beings. Game development needs more emphasis on user experience design and allencompassing game direction.
We love physics. The digital world is still far from matching the immersion and sense of ownership that physical products can convey. The tiniest aspects of what the intended audience receives can be tweaked by a designer, with minimum interference. It’s nice at times.
I’m a sucker for playing with both content and presentation. Typography is a way to deliver meaning, and it’s impossible to run out of things to learn and try. A word is worth a thousand pictures.
I write tools all the time. Everything I do is neatly organized and consists of separate components I can reuse and share. Sometimes I have the time to get things properly out in the open for everyone else, too. Working on usability of development tools is insanely interesting.
Most people developing tools for other developers or designers pay no attention to usability. They make tools for people like themselves. The reason I publish mine is so that others don't have to learn everything I know in order to get things done.
