Pure gameplay
Not all games rely on the same principles, but I aim for practical and feasible designs. Simple is beautiful, and I love beautiful. Simple concepts like these do away with elaborate storylines and focus on what’s at the core of an entertaining video game experience.
Simple elements create complex systems. That’s where games truly stand out: no other medium can give consumers such tools for self-expression, subtly guided experiences that are not only interactive, but contributed to by both designer and end-user. Users shouldn’t be commanded, we should focus on crerating circumstances for play.
Devving is fun
Development is about sharing a vision and finding the building blocks to construct it. You need to work towards that vision, inwards from the overall premise, and fill in the blanks through iteration. I love seeing my designs come to life, and collaborating with others to achieve that.
Your average game designer is building mechanical mazes for robotic consumers to wade through, but I aim to create holistic, coherent experiences – things that actually matter to the users. The whole industry could use a new kind of emphasis on user experience design and allencompassing game direction.
Work
I’ve worked on social games and web services at Digital Chocolate. You might spot some of my work in their games, so why not waste a minute or two on them while you’re surfing around?
